What they say about the Mela

I’ve been coming for 11 years, always a refreshing start to the new year.

The mela is a 1 week tension-free retreat, another world.

A great way to get in touch with my spirit.

I enjoyed meeting up with old acquaintances, don’t have to worry or think too much, its like hanging out with family (one I don’t have at home).

The mela provides a rare loving space for children to be with adults together in workshops, work and play and this is really appreciated.

You have inspired me to become a better person.

Ananda Mela  Yoga Festival Program

The yoga festival program facilitates community, creativity, fun while practising yoga and developing your meditation practice.

Meditation and Yoga

Meditation is an active, structured mental process of quietening the mind and harmonising with the body. This state of harmony is directed towards experiencing the innermost consciousness.  When the body and mind are made calm, a person can experience the essence of their own being.  Through regular practice one opens to the spiritual self, an empowering and transforming experience.

Yoga Asanas have been developed over thousands of years as an aid to good physical and mental health, well-being and self-realization. Various health problems including hypertension, indigestion, heart disease, arthritis, asthma and cancer can be prevented and often cured through the practice of Asanas combined with meditation and diet.

Meditation time includes singing and chanting, followed by silent mentally active meditation. Yoga classes, taught by experienced teachers, are offered twice a day as a feature of this festival.

Workshops

This Mela offers participants a variety of workshops, each lasting one and a half to two hours. The workshops are organized into three “streams”, ‘A Stream’ covering 3 sessions; ‘B Stream’ covering 2 sessions & ‘C Stream’ covering 1 session.

Wellbeing Space and Community Creations

There will be one and a half hours each afternoon for Community Creations, which are relaxed wellbeing and artistic get-togethers. This year we will be including Aboriginal Dance, African Drum and Dance, Creative art and Wellbeing sessions.

Chanting and Understanding the power of Spiritual Music

The middle day of the Mela is a “Chanting Day” which is 12-hours of continuous chanting. Kiirtan is a sacred dance that accompanies the chant and is a great help in meditation. It will be taught at the beginning of the Mela. The continuous chanting creates a blissful, uplifting environment, more conducive to deeper meditation. To create a calm, meditative environment, there are no workshops on this day. At the end of the chant everyone joins in, creating a very blissful atmosphere.

Participants can come and go into the chanting space during that time and meditate in the room as the sacred sounds continue. Many people find this day a highlight of the Mela.

Childcare/Youth Programs

There are childcare/youth programs during all the workshop times. These programs are divided into four age groups:

Children 2/3 to 5      Kids 6 to 8        Kids  9 to 12        Teens 13 to 18

Each program has experienced coordinators and has its own meeting place. During the middle day, there is a family outing called “Explore Stanthorpe”. Other outings may be planned. (These require permission slips from parents if a parent is not attending with a teen.)

There is “Meditation Time Childcare” run by one of the festival groups for younger children, so parents can get a chance to meditate.

Young children can have a healthy morning and afternoon snack during their session. Children between 7 and 12 will have workshop choices such as sports and crafts etc. During meditation times, older children usually feel happy to play around the community grounds.

Festival Groups

Each participant is assigned to a festival group consisting of around 8 to 10 people.

Festival Groups at the Ananda Mela serve several important purposes

        • They are a way to share and reflect on experiences with a small group in the Mela. Many people form close friendships within their groups.
        • They provide feedback to the Mela organisers. This helps keep everything moving smoothly.
        • They help with important cleaning and cooking jobs via festival group rotation.
        • They make us laugh! Each group prepares a skit or performance for the Grand Performance Night. These always make for a fantastic evening!

Evening Programs

Each evening everyone gathers in the main hall for enjoyable entertainment. This year our programs include:

        • Evenings of Aboriginal, Indonesian and Indian dances; mystical sounds of the Persian Santoor; music of heavenly spheres; and chants of the heart from many cultures
        • Talent Sharing and grand performance evening (please bring your uplifting skits, poetry, prose, songs, music and other performances.)
        • Our Grand Performance Night which will include children’s performances, Community Creations and festival group performances.
