The Ananda Mela Festival is held at the Ananda Palli community in Stanthorpe, Queensland. This section gives you information as well on What to Bring (and not to bring), and How to Get There (including the site phone number and a map.)
The Mela begins on the evening of Sunday, June 6th with dinner and an opening ceremony, but you may arrive any time in the afternoon to get set up. The Festival ends after lunch on Saturday, the 12th (but you can stay to help us clean up if you'd like.)
A Camping Holiday at the Ananda Palli Community
The Ananda Palli community has 100 acres of bush, fields and orchards with an ashram, school building, and organic vegetable farm and a few family homes. It is located 2.5 hours south of Brisbane and 40 kilometers north of Tenterfield on the New England Highway. It is located in Severnlea about ten minutes outside of Stanthorpe.
Accomodation is mainly camping with limited indoor facilities for women and families (contact us in advance to arrange this.) Toilets and showers are provided on the site.
As Stanthorpe is a popular
tourist destination, a variety of commercial hotels and cabins are also available
(and will need to be booked in advance.)
• Modest summer clothes (it gets hot, but keep in mind that it is a spiritual festival with monks and nuns in attendence) and warm, evening clothes (it gets cold!),
• A tent and camping gear (if you're staying indoors, bring bedding and a mattress if possible). Some mattresses are available.
• Swimmers (there is no place to swim on site, but you may want to go to a nearby river or pool if it gets hot. Children may go swimming on an excursion.)
• Meditation cushion, yoga mat or blanket,
• Toiletries, towel, torch, hat, musical instruments, notebook.
No pets
NO: Alcohol, tobacco, non-presciption drugs, and preferably, no junky food for children.
If you are arriving by bus, we can pick you up in Stanthorpe or at the Severnlea Cold Store, but you must let us know in advance.
The site has one phone, which you can use while you are there (for a small fee). You can receive calls, or contact the site on: (07) 4683-5207.
If you are driving, look for the sign at the New England Highway for Ananda Mela, which is right near the Severnlea Cold Store. Turn here at Back Creek Road and follow it (through some turns) five kilometers until you see Ananda Palli on your left. The address is 463 Back Creek Road, Severnlea.
